Finding shelter in emergencies

Finding shelter in emergencies can be the number one priority for many people and families. This is of course in a situation when your home or other safe place is no longer inhabitable. However, not many people think about how to find shelter in the case of an emergency. Instead, they stop as far as supplying enough food and water for their family and plan on meeting them at their home.

While this may be a wonderful idea in the case your home is un-effected by the disaster. It is possible that your home or other safe-place won’t survive the disaster.

Generally, if you are in need of shelter or supplies during an emergency, the best thing to do is to contact your local Red Cross chapter. This is because they are experienced and trained in helping those in need during the case of an emergency. Just remember, you may not be able to use your phones during an emergency. Pre-planning is of the utmost importance! Make sure to write down the address or have a map on-hand of where your nearest Red Cross is located.

If you are still unable to get to your Red Cross location nearest you, finding shelter doesn’t need to be difficult. Find a stable building or place away from the elements. Someplace that is easy to spot for rescue workers. Lastly, stay together. This is of course the most important step. Do not split up to find shelter as it is possible to loose your friends or family members during this important time in an emergency.
