Food storage checklist

When it comes to being prepared for emergencies, many families think medical supplies. However, one thing that should never be forgotten is our need to eat. What would you do without food for a day, a week, a month, or possibly a year? While it isn’t something we want to think about, it is something every family should become prepared for.

The first thing that you should do is jot down a list of all of your family members. Including their names, ages, and any allergies that they may or may not have. This should be included in your food storage, in the case of someone else taking care of any children or other special needs family members.

Once you have done this, you will be able to easily tell how much, and who to purchase food to be stored. For instance, if you have an infant; even if they are breast-fed you should keep a years supply of infant or toddler next step formula on hand. Making sure that you are able to feed your child through tough times.

Some of the best foods to store are beans, powdered milk, dehydrated or wet meats, flour, fruit that has been dehydrated or canned wet, bouillon, brown rice, soups, canned vegetables, vitamins or supplements.

While you need to feed yourself and your family, don’t forget your pets! Including pet food or extra meats and vegetables in your food storage, is a great way to ensure that your pets will survive a disaster with you.
