Recovering from disasters

Recovering from disasters can be a hardship in and of itself. Often times being a gradual process rather than a quick one; you may feel the need to rush into recovering from a disaster. However, it is important to remember that safety is your primary concern. It is even possible that if available, you can find assistance in recovering from a natural or man-made disaster that has hit you and your family.
The first step to recovering from disasters is the health and safety of you and your family. If someone needs medical attention, this should be priority over your home. Once you have determined that you are all safe and well; it is now time to begin thinking about returning to your home.
Before returning to your home you need to make sure that the area is safe. Depending on the disaster, several safety hazards could have been caused. From contaminated water, gas leaks, broken glass or wood, exposed and damaged wiring, to slippery floors. These are all things that could cause a possible threat of injury during your return home.
Once you have returned home, you will begin the healing process. It may very well take weeks, months, or possibly years to recover from any one disaster. However, as long as you have your health and family; you should remember that a home is just a home. Without your health and family, it will mean little. Time will help you to recover from a disaster.
